Student answer (Band 6.5)

In lots of countries, primary and secondary schools give a long summer vacation, which is very good for children's mental and physical health.

to begin with, schools should give a long summer break because kids can join some extra activities like football, basketball, or swimming, which also help them to gain some knowledge about the games. in addition, Long summer breaks also help students to get mentally strong and give them a little more time to think about the future.

Also, summer breaks help families create strong bonds between parents and children. parents can teach their children manners and teach them good life lessons, which can help them in their future and shape their lives along with it. Kids can spend more time with their grandparents, and grandparents can tell them lots of their life lessons and lots of fairy tale stories. As a result of it kids mental and physical health will become strong.

but there is lots of conflicts regarding the long summer breaks; some people say that. Long summer breaks can cause children to forget their manners and also forget their studies and become ill mannered, as well as some parents also complain that their personal life become difficult and they are not able to work properly from home if the kids are around

at last, i would like to say that long summer breaks are goods for developing the character and improving the physical and mental health of the kids or students and shaping their future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the value of long holidays and the arguments for shorter ones. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you mention benefits like family bonding and extracurricular activities, the arguments for shorter holidays are less detailed and rely on general statements about 'ill-mannered' children or parental work-life balance. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or logical extensions for each point. For instance, explaining how shorter holidays might improve academic continuity or reduce the 'summer slide' would strengthen the second body paragraph significantly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'to begin with', 'in addition', and 'as a result of it'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the benefits and the drawbacks is abrupt. The use of punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with capitalisation at the start of sentences (e.g., 'to begin with', 'at last'), which occasionally disrupts the logical progression. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring consistent sentence structure would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your ideas clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific terms like 'extracurricular activities', 'mental and physical health', and 'work-life balance'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'lots of' and 'good'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and avoid informal or vague expressions. For example, instead of saying 'very good', you could use 'beneficial' or 'advantageous'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are frequent errors in punctuation, such as missing full stops or incorrect capitalisation at the start of sentences. Additionally, there are minor grammatical slips, such as 'kids mental and physical health' (missing possessive apostrophe) and 'long summer breaks are goods' (incorrect pluralisation). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent punctuation will help improve your accuracy.
