Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many countries give students a summer break that lasts for two months or even longer. Some people think that these long summer breaks are really important while others think that school breaks should be shorter. From my opportunity, i can't tell direct answer on these question. Thereby, i will try to answer both view of that questions.

On the hand, there are also good reasons to have shorter summer holidays. If the summer holiday is too long students might forget what they learned during the summer holidays. It will be harder for them to go back to school. Teachers often have to spend time going over lessons or teaching things during the school year. Also parents who work might have a time taking care of their kids during a long holiday and paying for someone to watch them can be very expensive during the summer holidays. If the holidays were shorter and happened often during the year this would not be a problem for students or their parents.

In conclusion, long summer holidays give students time to rest spend time with their families and do things they like during the summer holidays. Shorter summer holidays might help students learn better and make things easier for parents who work. I think that a school calendar with breaks would be the choice for students and their families. Summer holidays are important, for students. We should think about how to make summer holidays work best for everyone. That includes students and their families.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the value of long holidays and the arguments for shorter ones. However, the development is quite limited. The first paragraph fails to clearly state a position, and the arguments provided (e.g., students forgetting information, childcare costs) are mentioned but not fully extended with specific examples or deep analysis. The conclusion attempts to summarize, but the lack of a clear, consistent position throughout the essay limits the score. To improve, ensure each body paragraph contains a clear topic sentence followed by a detailed explanation and a concrete example.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The introduction is disjointed, and the transition between the two main body paragraphs is abrupt. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'On the hand', 'In conclusion'), they are sometimes used incorrectly or mechanically. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow of ideas feels repetitive, particularly in the final paragraph where the same points are restated without adding new depth. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a distinct focus would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks range and precision. The student relies on basic, repetitive phrasing, such as 'summer holidays' and 'things', which appear multiple times. There is little attempt to use less common or academic vocabulary. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of variety in word choice prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on using synonyms and more precise academic collocations to express ideas, rather than repeating the same simple terms throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include 'From my opportunity, i can't tell direct answer on these question' and 'On the hand'. Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To reach a higher band, the student needs to focus on sentence variety, correct article usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately without grammatical slips.
