Student answer (Band 7.0)

Primary and Secondary schools close for minimum or more than two months during summertime in several nations. While these holidays provide several benefits for students and their families, some people believe that shorter holidays would be more beneficial.

To start with, longer breaks offer time to get relax. Students need time to take break from studies and divert their mind in other things such as improving skills, abilities, and exploring new places, as a result, they learn this way despite staying away from structural learning. Therefore, that time is beneficial for their overall development. Moreover, it increases family bonding as without any academic pressure, they visit their relatives, ancestors and spend quality time with family, which not only boost family bonding but also help to develop hobbies.

However, another section of society favor shorter summer break as of certain reasons. One reason could be the reduce learning loss as by taking longer breaks, many students forget what they learned, or hinder their steady progress, as a result, it takes extra time for teachers to recall them. Furthermore, it is difficult for working parents to take care of children during longer breaks. As these days, both parents work to fulfill needs, desires, and hardly get off from workplaces to stay with their children. And, simultaneously, arranging childcare add more pressure on their finance stability, thus they find hard to take care of their children during longer breaks.

From my perspectives, while breaks are crucial for relaxation and to get exposure, however, more than a month break hinder productivity and efficiency of students and impose pressure on the working parents. Thus, I believe, one month summer break is more than enough.

To conclude, although, breaks bring happiness, change, learning opportunities in children life, nevertheless, long vacation brings negative outcomes on students and parents.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the value of long holidays and the arguments for shorter ones. The position is clear throughout, and the main ideas are relevant. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of 'learning loss' is a strong point, but the discussion on family bonding could be more specific. The conclusion is a bit repetitive, restating points already made without adding depth. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more detailed examples or logical consequences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main arguments. Cohesive devices such as 'To start with', 'Moreover', 'However', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some transitions are a bit repetitive. Additionally, the use of referencing could be more precise in places to ensure smoother connections between sentences. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'structural learning' and 'financial stability'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing or incorrect word choices, such as 'get relax' (should be 'relax'), 'divert their mind in' (should be 'divert their minds to'), and 'recall them' (should be 're-teach them' or 'review the material'). These errors do not impede communication but indicate a need for more precise collocation and idiomatic usage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and prepositions, such as 'some people believe that shorter holidays would be more beneficial' (correct) versus 'as of certain reasons' (should be 'for certain reasons') and 'in children life' (should be 'in children's lives'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some run-on sentences and comma splices. The control of grammar is sufficient for a Band 6, but more attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage is needed.
