Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, there has been upward trend in primary and secondary school extending the duration of summer holidays. While both longer school holidays and shorter school holidays comes with certain benefits and drawbacks. In this essay I will discuss both the view with logical explanation.

To begin with, the extended holidays are advantageous to students. There has been research done on boredome that increased productivity is the subsequent of boredome. If the duration of the holidays is long enough to bore the students then it is taken as benificial as it leads to increased productivity. Such as in past many scientists were making theirselves bored intentionally because they knew the consequences of boredome. Furthermore, the longer holidays helps to make more stronger bond withing student and family. If the vacation is long enoug, the student will spent more and more time with family and can learn culture and tradition of society as a side quest. However if the vacation is not well planned priorly the time will be waste and could lead to bad consequences such as the student could bacome slacker and experience reduced productivity and creativity.

On the other hand, the shorter duration of holidays can lead to enhanced academic performance of students. As it is widely believed that a few subjects such as science and mathematics is conundrum for overall students. If the duration of the working days of school is long enough for the teachers to teach the whole syllabus without worrying about the upcoming long vacation, eventually the student would be able to fathom the concept of the such subjects hence it would become lucid for the students. However the individual's mental health also should be considered as the continuous working days of school could be hectic and stressed, which can cuase numerous mental health problems among students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the value of long holidays and the arguments for shorter ones. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding 'boredom' leading to productivity is an interesting point, but it is not fully explained or supported with clear examples, making the logic slightly tenuous. The discussion on family bonding is relevant but remains a bit superficial. The second body paragraph regarding academic performance is better developed, though the link between shorter holidays and mental health is introduced abruptly. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported by a clear, logical explanation and a concrete example.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand'. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by grammatical inaccuracies. Referencing is generally clear, but the progression of ideas within paragraphs could be smoother. The introduction is a bit repetitive, and the conclusion is missing entirely, which impacts the overall coherence of the piece. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a strong concluding summary would significantly enhance the structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, though there are several instances of word-choice errors and non-standard collocations. For example, 'subsequent of boredome' should be 'result of boredom', and 'making theirselves bored' is incorrect. There is an attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary like 'conundrum', 'fathom', and 'lucid', which is positive, but these are sometimes used in contexts that feel slightly unnatural. Spelling errors such as 'boredome', 'benificial', 'bacome', and 'cuase' occur frequently. Focusing on accurate spelling and learning common collocations will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's flow. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'holidays comes', 'subjects is'), incorrect word forms (e.g., 'more stronger'), and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'the subsequent of boredome'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are missing commas in complex sentences. While the meaning is usually clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would be highly beneficial.
