Student answer (Band 6.5)

Now a days in summers many countries face heat waves due to climate change due to which the schools remain close for two or more months. In this essay, I will duscuss the value of long term holidays and will give my argument for short vacations.

In summers, due to a dramatic change in the climate the overall temperature of the earth has rised. The children in primary and secondary school are mostly in the age that range from 7 to 13 years. Children could not withstand high temperature, and in schools due to a large number of students suffocations occurs which results in discomfort of students. For example, in countries where the classrooms are not well developed students become ill. So, long term holidays are of great value in such countries.

In contrast, when the children stay for a long time at home they become involved in many other activities like video games and outdoor games. These leisure activities provide them entertainment but they neglect their studies. This reduces their interest in studies. For example, in many countries after long term holidays the strength of students in schools reduces dramatically which not only affects the children but also increase the illiteracy in the country. Hence, the schools must develop a system to keep the environment of classrooms fresh and keep the holidays period short.

In conclusion, I am with short term school holidays. As the long school holidays keeps the children away from education and they lack interest in education.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the value of long holidays and the arguments for shorter ones. However, the development is somewhat limited. The argument regarding heat waves is relevant but could be expanded with more nuanced examples beyond just 'suffocation'. The second body paragraph attempts to link long holidays to academic decline, but the reasoning is a bit simplistic. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed explanations and perhaps consider the pedagogical or social benefits of breaks, rather than focusing solely on the negative impact of leisure time. The position is clear, but the ideas need more depth and academic support.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a clear progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. For instance, the transition 'For example' is used in both body paragraphs, and the linking between sentences could be more sophisticated. While the essay is easy to follow, the range of cohesive devices is limited, and some transitions feel forced. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are some spelling errors (e.g., 'duscuss', 'rised') and minor collocation issues (e.g., 'strength of students' instead of 'student attendance'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat basic, relying on common words like 'good', 'bad', and 'many'. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to education and climate change, and focus on using more precise academic collocations to express your ideas with greater clarity and sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'Now a days' (should be 'Nowadays'), 'schools remain close' (should be 'closed'), and 'the schools must develop a system to keep the environment of classrooms fresh'. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic tense consistency and pluralization would significantly improve your accuracy.
