Student answer (Band 6.5)

Primary and secondary schools in many countries has a vacation time which lasts until 2 months or more during summer holidays. I believe, this holiday vacations for this long period of time is necessary for the benefits of the pupils.

Many people around the world argue about the advantages and disadvantages of the issue. Some say, longer vacation does not give good impact because it can stop the learnings of the children. They point out that some pupils don't want to come back to school since they already enjoy the vacations. Others believed that it can affect their performances which start to boost because of the closure of the school. Another reasons are that working parents have difficulty in caring their children especially if both couple have same hours of work and parents are more stressful for having their kids in whole day.

In other points of view, many other people are in favor of having a long holiday because they believed that children have the right to rest from stress of school work. They should need time to relax and feel refresh which is essential to their health. They have also some time to be with the family members, planned to travel in a beautiful places which help tighten their bond to their parents and siblings.

In conclusion, I am agree that long vacations has a great value for the children because it is the time they could rest from physical and mental pressure from school. However, some parents have worried of who would take could care while their children are at home but managing time properly within the couple could help solve th issue.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the value of long holidays and the arguments for shorter ones. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the argument regarding 'learning loss' is mentioned but not fully explored with specific examples or deeper analysis. The position is clear throughout, but the supporting points in the second paragraph are slightly repetitive and lack depth. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your points with more specific evidence or logical consequences, ensuring that each argument is fully developed rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic attempt at using cohesive devices, such as 'In other points of view' and 'In conclusion'. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'Another reasons are that'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. While the overall progression is logical, the use of cohesive devices is not always flexible or precise, which limits the score to a 6.0. Improving the variety of linking words would help the ideas connect more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the reader to understand your points. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'vacation time', 'mental pressure', and 'school work'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'give good impact', 'start to boost', and 'take could care'. These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a limited range and a lack of precision. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and using more precise academic vocabulary to express your ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('schools... has', 'others believed that it can affect'), incorrect verb forms ('they should need time'), and missing articles. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate better control over basic grammar, particularly verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, and attempt more complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
