Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some part of the world, higher and lower institution go on vacation for up to 8 weeks and above during the warmer months. May be because of more rest needed, the condition of the weather, however i do not support this because of some few reasons.

On one hand, long term holidays help so children to crate time for their self and also have enough rest, chase some other careers, as well as helping their parents at home or at work.

For example, when i was in secondary school, whenever we go on long break i always help my mother in the farm and also go for my basketball practice. It helped me to generate more funds for my school fees and also chase my dream of becoming a professional basketball player.

On the other hand, long brakes have affected so many students. When children have to much free time they tend to get involved in some bad behaviour and misconducts such as stealing, fighting, and some other criminal acts . So many individuals go about taking what dose not belong to them. For instance , one of my class mate who was also my Neighbor usually followed his friends to peoples farm to steal their crops and when they are being cought by the invigilators, they will be sent to prison but if they are in school why usually do not have the time to do that.

More so, longer holidays makes school students who do not take their studies serious eventually forgets what they have been thought during school time as a result of playing too much and neglecting their studies. To illustrate, a friend of mine whom attended the same college as me always finds it difficult to remember what was though the previous semester.

To conclude, reducing the time of break will be a great help to the student in other to focus more on education instead of causing chaos everywhere.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the value of long holidays and the arguments for shorter ones. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The first body paragraph provides a personal example, but the second paragraph relies on anecdotal evidence that borders on over-generalization regarding criminal behavior. The position is clear, but the arguments could be more balanced and academic in tone. To reach a higher band, ensure that ideas are supported by broader societal observations rather than relying heavily on personal anecdotes, and ensure the introduction clearly outlines the scope of the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'More so' and 'May be because of'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs needs more variety to avoid repetitive sentence structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and sophistication. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'higher and lower institution' instead of 'educational institutions', and 'long brakes' instead of 'long breaks'. The student uses basic vocabulary throughout, and there is a lack of collocations or less common lexical items that would demonstrate a wider range. Spelling errors, such as 'crate' for 'create', 'thought' for 'taught', and 'dose' for 'does', also detract from the overall quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there is a high frequency of grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('longer holidays makes'), incorrect verb forms ('whom attended'), and punctuation errors. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction impede the flow and demonstrate a lack of control over complex structures. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring correct verb tense usage throughout the text.
