Student answer (Band 6.0)

Primary and secondary schools remain close for two or more months in the summer holidays. This essay discusses the importance of long summer holidays and reasons for the support of shorter holidays with examples.

Long summer holidays are common in schools in many countries. As we all know, summer is extremely hot in many countries like middle-east. Keeping in view the preventive care of kids from heat stress, governments decide the length of summer holidays. In Pakistan, India and surrounding countries, heatwave is a serious threat during may and june and public warnings are announced during peak heat days. In this senario, there is no need to compromise the kids health as they are more vulnerable to heat stress during summer. Due to this main reason, many countries ensure that the peak heat days are covered in summer holidays in order to protect the kids from possible threat of heat stroke and dehydration.

On the other side of picture, long holidays may result in loss of studies of childern as it shortens the annual study days. Kids are not seriously attentive for the home work during long summer holidays and a big gap is created between kids and their schools. Moreover, after long holidays, time is needed to make them deciplined again. So, all these arguments support the shorter holidays.

Government can design a shorter holidays plan by keeping in view the heat wave forcasting dates. In this way, the problem of possible heat threat to young people will be resolved.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the value of long holidays and the arguments for shorter ones. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you provide a clear reason for long holidays (heat protection), the arguments for shorter holidays are less developed and rely on general statements like 'loss of studies' and 'need to make them disciplined again' without specific examples or deeper analysis. To improve, ensure each main point is supported by a concrete explanation or a hypothetical scenario that demonstrates the impact of the policy. The position is clear, but the depth of the arguments needs to be expanded to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the other side of picture' and 'Moreover' to transition between ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some linking phrases are slightly unnatural or missing articles (e.g., 'On the other side of the picture'). The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be strengthened by using a wider variety of cohesive markers to connect sentences more fluidly rather than relying on simple transitions.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'heat stress', 'dehydration', and 'heatwave'. However, there are several spelling errors ('senario', 'childern', 'deciplined', 'forcasting') and some awkward collocations ('loss of studies', 'support of shorter holidays'). To achieve a higher score, focus on improving spelling accuracy and using more precise academic collocations. Expanding your range of vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms for common words would also help demonstrate greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Common issues include missing articles ('in middle-east', 'in this senario'), subject-verb agreement, and pluralisation errors ('kids health', 'shorter holidays plan'). While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to affect the overall fluency. To improve, pay closer attention to basic grammatical rules, particularly the use of articles and plural forms, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
