In many countries, primary and secondary schools close for two months or more in the summer holidays.
What is the value of long school holidays?
What are the arguments in favour of shorter school holidays?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many countries of the world, educational institutes are closed during summer and winters. Some people might disagree with this statement, but I completely agree with this notion, not only because students stay safe from the severity of weather and they have chance to spend lots of time with their families but also because they can participate in extracurricular activities.
It is often argued by some people that long term holidays are very fruitful for children. As they can spend maximum time with their families. They can improve their creativity and explore their hidden talents. Take an example of Germany, where 63 percent 63 people believe that long holidays are best opportunity to create innovations and exploring hidden talents. Thus, long term holidays play a crucial role not only for health perspective and quality time with family but also exploring different talents and innovations.
The supporters of shorter holidays believe that long holidays are wastage of time. Children are unable to focus on their studies. The shorter holidays have viable advantages. As learners are more focused and committed with their syllabus and ambitions. For instance, a recent survey conducted in Japan, revealed that people believe that shorter holidays play a crucial role in education and progress of country. Most of the time pupils spend in schools and learn creativity.
However, some might disagree, but I believe that long holidays have multiple benefits. As students spend quality time with their loved ones and learn valuable ethics.
To sum up, longer and shorter holidays both have multiple advantages. We have to focus on the learning, creativity and innovations. According to needs and mental level of young ones we have to decided shorter holidays are beneficial or longer ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the value of long holidays and the arguments for shorter ones. However, the development is somewhat superficial. The examples provided, such as the '63 percent' statistic for Germany or the survey in Japan, lack specific context or credible detail, making them feel generic. While a position is stated, the arguments are repetitive, particularly regarding 'creativity' and 'innovation,' which are mentioned in almost every paragraph without being fully explored. To improve, you should provide more concrete, logical explanations for why shorter holidays might lead to better academic outcomes, rather than relying on vague references to surveys.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However,' 'To sum up,' and 'For instance,' but they are sometimes used mechanically or inappropriately. For example, the sentence 'As they can spend maximum time with their families' is a fragment that should be connected to the previous sentence. Additionally, the transition between the discussion of long holidays and the arguments for shorter ones is abrupt. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that each paragraph develops a single, distinct idea would enhance the logical progression of your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on repetitive phrases like 'play a crucial role' and 'long term holidays.' There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'wastage of time' (should be 'a waste of time') and 'learn creativity' (which is slightly unnatural). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to education and child development, and avoid using the same phrases repeatedly throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Many sentences are fragmented, such as 'As they can spend maximum time with their families,' which lacks a main clause. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'progress of country' (should be 'the progress of the country') and 'best opportunity' (should be 'the best opportunity'). While these errors do not usually impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focus on ensuring each sentence has a clear subject and verb and check for missing articles.
