Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the value of long holidays and the arguments for shorter ones. However, the development of ideas is inconsistent. The first body paragraph focuses on the benefits of long holidays rather than the arguments for shorter ones, creating confusion regarding the task requirements. The second paragraph attempts to address the drawbacks of long holidays but lacks depth and clear structure. The position is somewhat unclear due to the lack of a strong, consistent argument throughout the essay. To improve, ensure each paragraph clearly addresses the specific question asked and provides more detailed, logical support for each point.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with' and 'In conclusion', they are often used mechanically or incorrectly. The transition between ideas is frequently abrupt, and the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the confusing shift in the second paragraph where the student mentions 'students but other side it has some benefits'. The overall structure lacks a cohesive flow, making it difficult for the reader to follow the argument. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'mentaly', 'difffernt', 'compitation', 'hurrdle', 'bussine', and 'consendration'. These errors occasionally impede communication. The student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles to use less common lexical items accurately. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on learning correct spellings and expanding their vocabulary to include more precise, academic terms that are appropriate for a formal essay. Practising collocations and synonyms will also help improve the overall quality of expression.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('students become lazy... they are addicted'), incorrect preposition usage, and faulty sentence structure. Punctuation is also problematic, with inconsistent capitalisation and missing commas. While there is an attempt to use complex sentences, they are often poorly constructed and contain errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. The majority of sentences are not error-free. To improve, the student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and consistent punctuation before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
