Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the two main parts of the prompt: the value of long school holidays (protecting children from extreme heat) and the arguments in favour of shorter ones (negative impacts on education, discipline, and routines). The candidate attempts to develop ideas, such as mentioning heatstroke risks and the loss of daily habits, and offers a solution like summer camps. However, the development tends to be repetitive and relies heavily on personal anecdote rather than fully extended reasoning. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of task fulfilment places this response securely at Band 5.5, moving towards Band 6 as all parts of the prompt are addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which helps structure the discussion around the introduction, the value of holidays, drawbacks, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing sentence sequencing. For example, sentences like 'Finaly there one solution to hadle this is summer camp' lack smooth integration into the text. Cohesive devices are used mechanically ('On the other hand', 'In conclusion'), and referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'Not leaning these habit for long time make the children lazy'. Overall, the organization shows some coherent framework but lacks consistent logical progression, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary range is limited and frequently repetitive. Words like 'children', 'hot', 'summer', and 'education' are overused. There are numerous spelling errors ('becaoming', 'extremly', 'importat', 'dicuus', 'experinced', 'schoo', 'childrend', 'untill', 'waether', 'baceme', 'bareable', 'sever', 'fundamnetal', 'leaning', 'Howerver', 'cildren', 'thier', 'importan', 'Finaly', 'hadle', 'shortime', 'educate your self') and word-form inaccuracies ('difference between weather and whether', 'feels me like diffcult to breath'). These persistent errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and restrict the lexical score to a Band 4.5 or 5.0. Given the frequent strain caused by basic vocabulary errors, a Band 4.5 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that result in severe grammatical errors. Examples of faulty structures include 'Weather showing very dramatic changes and summer becaoming extremly hot' (missing subject/verb agreement and auxiliary verbs) and 'Travelling with heavy bag of books and sitting in one humid room with many people feels me like diffcult to breath.' Punctuation is weak, and tense control is inconsistent. Because errors are frequent, systemic, and often distort meaning or cause strain for the reader, the grammar performance aligns with Band 4.0.
