Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses both parts of the task by discussing the value of long school holidays and the arguments in favour of shorter ones. The student adopts a clear position in the introduction and maintains it throughout the essay. Ideas are presented and supported with reasons and examples, such as mentioning creative learning opportunities like music and art classes, as well as concerns regarding academic regression and working parents. However, some arguments remain slightly under-developed, and the explanation regarding safety concerns could be articulated more precisely. Overall, the response meets the requirements for Band 6.0 as it addresses all parts of the prompt with relevant ideas, though further elaboration on specific points would push the score higher.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, utilizing standard introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as "To begin with," "Additionally," and "On the other hand." However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in awkward transitions like "for favour of shorter school holidays" in the introduction. Furthermore, pronoun referencing occasionally lacks clarity, such as "them" and "they" in the second paragraph where the exact antecedents become slightly confused. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the distinct prompts, earning this section a solid Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as "phenomenon," "merits and demerits," and "academic performance." However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including "vactions" instead of vacations, "somthing" instead of something, "acedamic" instead of academic, "intersting" instead of interesting, and "prefarances" instead of preferences. Additionally, collocation and word forms are occasionally inaccurate, such as "suffer academic result" and "kiddnepping case." These errors do not impede communication overall, but they firmly place the lexical resource within the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. Examples of complex structures include conditional clauses ("If school offers higher leave, learners can enjoy...") and subordinate clauses. However, the text contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses, articles, and prepositions. Examples include "stayed close" instead of stay closed, "provide opportunities to student" instead of students, "students spends" instead of spend, and "A person require" instead of requires. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are pervasive enough to restrict the grammatical score to Band 5.5.
