Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the value of long school holidays and the arguments in favour of shorter ones, whilst also stating a clear personal opinion. The writer presents relevant ideas, such as students gaining outside skills and avoiding burnout, as well as counterarguments referencing systems like China's where shorter holidays coexist with academic success. However, some of these ideas remain slightly under-developed and lack extended examples. For instance, the mention of China is brief and could have been elaborated to strengthen the argumentation. Despite this limitation, the overall response covers the prompt adequately, earning a Band 6.0 according to the descriptors for addressing all parts of the task with relevant, if sometimes under-developed, ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, including an introduction, body paragraphs addressing both sides of the argument, a personal opinion, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices and transition markers are used, such as 'Firstly', 'further more', 'Although', and 'In conclusion'. However, cohesion is at times faulty or mechanical, and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'the system of education there is so much hard than many other system'. Paragraph transitions could be smoother, and some sentences lack logical continuity. Overall, the organizational structure is adequate to earn a Band 5.5, reflecting a mix of clear overarching progression alongside noticeable mechanical or repetitive cohesive errors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic essay, using terms such as 'fundamental pillar', 'vacation', 'undergraduates', and 'strategy'. However, there is a significant number of spelling, word-choice, and morphological errors throughout the text, including 'comunity', 'contries', 'long trem', 'effectes', 'opposit orientation', 'suffisent', 'amoung', 'succefull', 'aproach', 'specificly', 'somthing', 'ghive', 'youngs', 'stratigy', 'I conclusion', and 'essnetial'. These inaccuracies demonstrate a limited control of word formation and spelling. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic meaning of the prompt, the density of lexical errors places this response firmly at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'pupils who need to study' and 'students who often hate going to school'. However, the text contains a high frequency of grammatical and punctuation errors that impede fluency and sometimes strain comprehension. Notable errors include 'Education regarding as a fundamental pillar', 'this make learn new education skills harder', 'students do not require to the school skills only on them life', and 'the system of education there is so much hard'. Subject-verb agreement, prepositions, and verb forms are frequently mishandled. Because these frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and accurate complex sentences are scarce, the grammar aligns with Band 5.0.
