Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, examining both the value of long school holidays and the arguments in favour of shorter ones. The writer clearly outlines the advantages, such as engagement in co-curricular activities and travel, alongside disadvantages, including screen time, health issues, and social isolation. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed and lack extension. For instance, the mention of part-time jobs and volunteering is introduced briefly without much elaboration. The position of the writer is apparent throughout, and the main tenets of the prompt are covered satisfactorily, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a clear overall arrangement with logical paragraphing, separating the introduction, advantages, disadvantages, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'On the other hand' and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, 'Both have their own advantages and disadvantages' lacks a clear antecedent in the preceding sentence, and the final sentence of the conclusion is a fragmented run-on structure ('...for them.so that they can stay connected...'). Paragraph sequencing is logical, but the transitions between sentences can feel abrupt at times, keeping the response at a Band 6 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'co-curricular activities', 'cognitive and physical abilities', and 'volunteering'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'seconday' instead of secondary, 'benefical' instead of beneficial, 'missue' instead of misuse, and 'interpersonally skills' instead of interpersonal skills. Collocations are occasionally awkward, such as 'playing video games and watch movies' or 'face a medical problems like continously monitoring on the screen'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambitious structures like conditional and relative clauses ('like in which other subjects they are interested'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues. Examples include subject-verb agreement errors ('many European countries has implemented'), article misuse ('get a benefits'), preposition problems ('living in a home'), and tense inconsistencies. Punctuation is also flawed, particularly with comma splices and run-on sentences in the conclusion. Although the errors are noticeable, they rarely impede overall understanding, making Band 5.5 or a solid Band 6 appropriate, though leaning towards Band 5.5 due to the density of basic structural and agreement errors.
