Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the task by discussing the value of long school holidays (such as protection from extreme weather and time for hobbies/family) and the arguments in favour of shorter holidays (mental refreshment and academic continuity). The position is clear throughout, and relevant ideas are presented. However, some of the supporting points are somewhat generalised and lack deep extension or specific, concrete examples. For instance, mentioning research into heat waves is a good start, but it remains undeveloped. Furthermore, minor repetition occurs in the conclusion. Overall, the content fully satisfies the basic requirements of the task, earning a Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised into an introduction, two body paragraphs representing each prompt question, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to connect sentences, such as 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes mechanical, and there are occasional awkward logical links between sentences. For example, moving from heat waves to extracurricular activities within the same paragraph feels slightly disjointed. Nevertheless, the overall progression is clear and follows a logical path, warranting a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate to the academic prompt, using terms such as 'preservation of culture', 'paramount importance', 'extra-curricular activities', and 'psychological health'. However, there are numerous spelling errors throughout the text, including 'verious' for various, 'refreashing' for refreshing, 'numerious' for numerous, 'tempreature' for temperature, 'Consequantly' for consequently, 'Reaserach' for research, 'demonstarats' for demonstrates, 'impotance' for importance, 'acadamic' for academic, 'benefitual' for beneficial, 'sighnificant' for significant, and 'imporatant' for important. These spelling mistakes detract from the lexical score, placing the response firmly at Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional-like ideas and subordinate clauses. However, grammatical control is frequently undermined by errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'schools provides', 'vacations holds', 'children gets') and punctuation. There are also persistent spelling-driven errors that occasionally affect word forms. While the meaning is generally clear and communication is rarely impeded, the density of basic grammatical and mechanical errors prevents the essay from reaching Band 6.0, resulting in a Band 5.5.
