Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response partially addresses the prompt by discussing the value of long school holidays and briefly touching upon shorter holidays. However, the essay is unfinished, stopping abruptly in the final paragraph, and it fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, coming in at only 232 words. Ideas regarding the value of holidays—such as rest, physical fitness, and family travel—are introduced but remain somewhat under-developed due to the lack of sufficient extension and the incomplete nature of the response. To improve, ensure all parts of the prompt are fully fleshed out with supporting explanations and examples while meeting the required word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays some basic organization, utilizing paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and the incomplete conclusion. However, overall progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and weak cohesive devices. For instance, the transition 'Following that' is overused and used inappropriately to link ideas that do not logically follow sequentially. Additionally, referencing is occasionally faulty, such as confusing 'there' with 'their'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is incomplete, which disrupts the logical flow and structural integrity of the essay.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, representing a limited but minimally adequate range for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'undeniable fact', 'physical fitness', and 'exhausting', but these are counterbalanced by frequent word choice errors and spelling mistakes (e.g., 'lenghty' instead of lengthy, 'there' instead of their, 'undersatnd' instead of understand). These lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors occasionally cause strain for the reader, though general meaning usually remains comprehensible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures frequently contain errors. There are noticeable grammatical and punctuation lapses throughout the text, such as missing articles, subject-verb agreement issues ('childrens should get'), and preposition errors. For example, writing 'studying in summer by coming to school can be exhausting' lacks stylistic fluency. While these errors do not completely obscure the message, their frequency restricts the grammar score to the lower bands.
