Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the value of long school holidays (spending time with parents, pursuing hobbies and non-academic skills) and the arguments in favour of shorter ones (maintaining a stable routine, preventing learning loss). However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, relying on generalised statements rather than deep elaboration. For instance, the mention of school hours running from "8am to 8pm" is a sweeping generalisation, and supporting details remain brief. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of task fulfilment aligns with Band 5.5 to 6.0, ultimately fitting Band 5.5 due to under-developed main points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four paragraphs, providing a basic structural framework with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. There is a noticeable lack of smooth transitions between sentences, and referencing is sometimes unclear, such as "The benifits of having a long school holidays is children can spend their time with parents." Furthermore, logical progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and inadequate use of cohesive devices. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within the body paragraphs struggles with mechanical links, placing it at a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as "stable routine" and "non acedemic skills," but there are frequent spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text. Examples include "childern" instead of children, "spent" instead of spend, "persue" instead of pursue, "benificial" instead of beneficial, "volleyboll" instead of volleyball, and "moring" instead of morning. These noticeable errors and misspellings cause some distraction for the reader, which reflects the characteristics of Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting complex structures such as relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing (e.g., "Where the shorter school holidays are benificial for..."). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement (e.g., "childern can spent", "schedule of the scholl is... where in some senarios the study hours are also be there") and preposition usage. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with comma splices and unnecessary commas separating clauses. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 criteria.
