Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the value of long school holidays and the arguments in favour of shorter ones, as outlined in the prompt. A position is presented, and relevant ideas are introduced, such as spending time with family, relaxing, and maintaining learning routines. However, the development of these ideas is limited and at times repetitive. For instance, the point about spending time with family and friends is mentioned in multiple paragraphs without significant extension. The arguments regarding shorter holidays lack clear supporting examples, resulting in an overall treatment that aligns best with Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is organised into four paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the overall progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by unclear referencing and a lack of logical flow. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often awkward or inaccurate, such as 'so therefore' and 'This holidays are beneficial'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs is frequently faulty, resulting in sentences that feel disconnected. While the structure is minimally adequate to follow the general direction of the essay, the mechanical and inaccurate use of cohesive ties keeps it at a Band 5.0 level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with several noticeable errors in word choice and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of inaccurate lexical choices include 'learning routin', 'quit important', 'promienent', 'acamedic', 'essiental', and 'theire kills'. While the student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'unwind', 'generous' (misused for enthusiastic), and 'enviroment', these attempts are marred by spelling mistakes and collocation errors. The range is minimally adequate for the task, but frequent errors place this firmly in the Band 5.0 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many complex forms are faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('schools provide... provide', 'this holidays are have'), pronoun confusion ('gave his time'), and prepositional errors ('spend their time to learn'). Punctuation and word form errors are also noticeable. Although the meaning can generally be deciphered, the high frequency of basic and complex structural errors causes difficulty and frustration for the reader, corresponding to a Band 5.0 level.
