Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt regarding the value of long holidays and the arguments for shorter ones, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion on the value of long holidays mentions resting and visiting relatives, but these points are expressed repetitively rather than expanded with deep reasoning or clear examples. The opening introduction contains formulaic and slightly confused phrasing, such as 'In this easy, I will explain you about summer holidays', which distracts from a clear, sustained position throughout the text. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully extend and support each main idea with relevant details, ensuring all parts of the prompt are explored in depth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation in the text, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The essay begins with an introductory paragraph, but subsequent paragraphs bundle multiple distinct ideas together without smooth transitions, creating a choppy flow. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical and repetitive way, particularly with transitions like 'First of all', 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore', which do not always logically connect the underlying arguments. Paragraphing is also problematic, as the second paragraph is exceptionally long and crams multiple separate thoughts into a single block of text. Improving the logical flow and separating distinct ideas into clear, well-structured paragraphs is essential for better readability.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer relies on basic and repetitive words, such as 'study', 'holidays', 'students', and 'reasons', throughout the response. There are also noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices that cause some difficulty, such as writing 'In this easy' instead of 'essay', using 'hot days' instead of 'hot weather', and employing unnatural phrasing like 'family;s function'. Less common vocabulary is rarely attempted, and when it is, it is often inaccurate. To improve this area, the student should focus on expanding their range of functional synonyms, mastering standard collocations, and checking word forms before final submission.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined by basic conjunctions. Attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty, such as in the clause 'there are various reasons by which government close the primary and and secondary schools'. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'Government provide', missing or incorrect articles, and punctuation mistakes such as lowercase letters at the start of sentences like 'i wanna' and 'this will help'. These frequent errors can cause occasional difficulty for the reader. Incorporating a wider variety of accurate complex sentence patterns and paying careful attention to basic grammatical rules will greatly enhance the writing.
