Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the value of long school holidays and the arguments for shorter ones, which places it in the mid-range. However, the ideas are presented in a limited way and some development is superficial or unclear. For instance, the discussion on the value of holidays mentions relaxing the mind and learning skills, but these points are rushed rather than fully extended with clear examples. Similarly, the counter-arguments regarding negative activities like social media use and anxiety are introduced but lack detailed support. The writer attempts to take a position, but the overall progression of ideas is hindered by repetitive phrasing and a lack of depth, particularly in the introduction and conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraph division for the introduction, the two body paragraphs covering opposing views, and a brief conclusion. There is an attempt to sequence ideas logically, moving from the benefits of long holidays to the drawbacks. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. Cohesive devices are often used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as starting sentences with phrases like 'Conversely the heaters of the opposite opinion' or 'To reiterate although in my perseption'. Referencing and logical progression between sentences can be unclear, requiring the reader to work harder to follow the intended argument, which is characteristic of this level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'institudes', 'land scapes', 'un productive', and 'depretion', but these attempts are frequently marred by spelling errors and incorrect word choices. There are noticeable errors in word formation and collocation, such as 'heaters' instead of proponents or critics, and 'spant' instead of spend. While the meaning can generally be deciphered, these frequent lexical inaccuracies and spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher rating.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences or attempted complex sentences that are consistently faulty. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, article usage, and subject-verb agreement throughout the text, such as 'education institudes are close', 'longer holidays provided a more time', and 'holidays in institute are have been shorter'. Punctuation is also weak, with run-on sentences lacking proper commas or full stops. These frequent grammatical errors occur across the majority of sentences and can cause significant difficulty for the reader, placing the writing firmly in this band.
