Student answer (Band 6.0)

Long school holidays remained a widely debated topic in society. It is a common practice in many countries to close school for two or more months during summers. Many people argue agaist it while some people think they have advantages. I think that they have more advantages than disadvantages if holidays are organised wisely.

On the one hand, people think long holidays a solution to many problems, such as many countries have long hot summers which it difficult for small kids to cope with hot weather and they might become sick. Children staying at home in holidays also partly help to adress problem of the pollution and global warming due to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles. Moreover, many educationists consider holidays advantageous as it provides students opportunity to develop self decipline. Futhermore, it provides children to spend time with their families and to arrange trips to their relatives and strengthen the relatioships.

On the other hand, some people think long holidays wastes a lot of time of students. In addition it make them lazy and negatively effcet their educational performance. Many working parents find it difficult to manage kids at home as they have no one to take care of them. Some people consider unfair to pay fee for kids during the long holidays and criticise the school which remained close for longer period of time in an year.

In conclusion, I think advantges of long holidays are more than disadvantages and students should be given flexible educational tasks by school during holidays to keep them busy. I think institutions should run some sessions of online teaching rather than totally leaving students on their on. Likewise, some short summer camps can be arranged to keep kids upto date and involve them in some intellectual activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both questions and maintain a clear view that long holidays have more advantages, provided they are organised wisely. Relevant benefits include relief from hot weather, family time and opportunities for children to develop independence; you also present counterarguments about parents’ childcare difficulties and possible effects on learning. This covers the task well, but the support is uneven: the pollution point is asserted rather than explained, and the claim about fees and schools remaining closed is not clearly connected to why shorter holidays are preferable. To strengthen the response, explain how each point supports one side of the comparison and develop fewer examples more fully. Your practical suggestions in the conclusion add a useful qualification to your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs signposted by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “In addition” and “Likewise” help guide the reader. The conclusion also follows from the stated preference for long holidays while suggesting ways to address their drawbacks. At times, however, several points are crowded into long sentences, particularly in the first body paragraph, which makes the relationships between claims less clear. Some transitions connect items in a list rather than showing how one idea leads to the next. Use clearer sentence boundaries and add brief explanations between examples to make the progression more natural and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “carbon emissions,” “educational performance,” “self discipline” and “intellectual activities,” so the main ideas are understandable. However, inaccurate word forms, spelling and collocations are noticeable and limit precision. Examples include “agaist,” “decipline,” “adress” and “effcet,” as well as “spend time with their families” being expressed more naturally than “provides children to spend time.” Some phrases are also vague or awkward, such as “a solution to many problems” and “keep kids upto date.” Aim to learn vocabulary in accurate phrases, not as isolated words, and proofread spelling and word forms. More precise expressions for the effects of holidays and the reasons for shorter breaks would make the argument sound more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional in “if holidays are organised wisely” and a relative clause in “which remained close.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “many countries have long hot summers which it difficult” is missing a verb, while “it make them lazy” has a subject–verb agreement error. There are also problems with articles and sentence construction in “find it difficult to manage kids at home as they have no one to take care of them” and “some people consider unfair to pay fee.” Practise checking each clause for a subject and finite verb, and review agreement, articles and singular/plural forms. Breaking up overloaded sentences will also help you control complex structures.
