Student answer (Band 6.0)

Long summer holidays for students in primary and secondary schools are common phenomen in many countries. In this essay, I will show advantages of long school break as well as arguments in favour of schorter holidays.

On the one hand, children can benefit from having extended school break during summer by persuing their interests and hobbies. Although children do not study during summer time, by having time for their hobbies, they can gain other possibilities to grow. I agree that knowledge learned in school is essential for children's education, therefore I believe that being able to pursue other acctivities can give them wider perspective. Children can find new passions thay become their future professions, like for instance sport or astrology. School still will be their tool for aiming future goals but without time to explore new possibilities, they may not find what they are.

At the same time, by providing shorter school breaks, schools may have more time to explore additional subjects and topics. More time spend in classes during the school year means more time for education. Thanks to that solution, children could have been better prepared for next steps in their education. Longer school year means that children could dive in more into details of the topics that talk about in school. Thus, shorter school holidays could not only bring enormus benefits for children future education but also for standard of education in general.

In conslusion, there are arguments in fovour of both longer and shorter school breaks, however I personally believe that extended school holidays have more advantages than schorter one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question and give a clear personal view in the conclusion: extended holidays are more advantageous. The first main paragraph explains how free time can let children pursue hobbies and discover interests that may shape future careers, while the next presents the case for shorter breaks through additional classroom learning. These are relevant ideas, but they are not developed equally: the benefits of hobbies receive examples, whereas the shorter-holiday argument largely repeats that more class time means more education. The claim that students would be “better prepared” would be stronger with a specific explanation or example, such as how regular lessons reduce learning gaps. Develop the counterargument further and connect each example explicitly to the value of the holiday pattern being discussed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two positions, and a conclusion that restates your preference. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “At the same time,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the argument, and the ideas generally progress logically within each paragraph. This already provides a coherent framework, but some links feel formulaic, and a few references are not fully clear. For example, “Thanks to that solution” requires the reader to infer that it refers to shorter breaks, while “what they are” is an unclear reference to children’s interests or future roles. Use more precise referencing and vary transitions by showing the actual relationship between ideas—for example, cause, contrast, or consequence—rather than relying mainly on standard opening phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “pursue their interests,” “future professions,” “additional subjects,” and “standard of education.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “wider perspective,” although some combinations are not natural or precise. Spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable: “phenomen,” “schorter,” “persuing,” “acctivities,” and “enormus” make the writing less polished, while “dive in more into details” is awkward. “Astrology” may also not express the intended example if you mean the scientific study of space; “astronomy” would be more accurate. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common collocations, such as “spend more time studying a subject” and “gain a broader perspective.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concessive clause (“Although children do not study…”) and a conditional structure (“without time to explore… they may not find…”). Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical patterns, however, need more control. In “More time spend in classes,” the participle should be “spent”; “topics that talk about in school” needs a passive form, such as “topics that are discussed at school”; and “children future education” requires a possessive form. The phrase “children could have been better prepared” also uses a past modal form where a present or future possibility is intended. Review verb forms, passive constructions, and possessives, then proofread each sentence for agreement and missing grammatical words.
