IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries, primary and secondary schools close for two months or more in the summer holidays.

What is the value of long school holidays?

What are the arguments in favour of shorter school holidays?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

This argument shows the two different opinions of the people about the summer holidays given to the primary and secondary school students in many countries.

Firstly, people might argue that there is no need for the holidays in the summer because they think it might cause a problem in the studies for there children but on the other hands, actually it is more beneficial for there studies and there health. Students gets projects and assignments to work on during there holidays which builds a self study habits in them.

Secondly, some people might disagree with the holidays because they have to take much more care of there children like taking them to parks, playing games with them and they have to give much more time to there kids then they do in there daily routine. But they don't understand that the holidays help children to get less stressed by the studies because studing the whole time becomes a burden on the kids which will slowly drive them away from there studies and there parents as well because there parents forces them to study all the time and they don't get to do any activity which can help to cheer them up.

Thirdly, some parents favour shorter holidays because they taking a small break is fine but they don't think from the prospective of the kids.Because there are alot of kids who used to work for there fee.

In conclusion, holidays are really very important for the children for there growth physically and mentally.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You recognise that the question asks about the benefits of long holidays and the case for shorter ones, and you give a clear overall view that holidays support children’s development. However, the response only partially develops these two sides. The points about rest, stress and children’s health are relevant, but they are asserted rather than explained with specific examples. The argument for shorter holidays is less clear: parental childcare demands are mentioned, but the final point about children who work to pay fees is not connected to why shorter holidays would help them. Your position is also difficult to follow at first, as the opening frames the essay as a disagreement without stating your own view. Explain each side directly and support the main reasons with relevant examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an introduction, several body paragraphs signposted with “Firstly,” “Secondly” and “Thirdly,” and a conclusion, so there is some visible organisation. However, the ideas do not build into a clear overall progression: the first paragraph mixes objections to holidays with benefits, while the third introduces children working to pay fees without showing how this supports shorter holidays. Repeated references to “some people” and “they” also make it harder to identify whose views are being discussed. Linking phrases such as “on the other hand” are attempted, but the contrast is not consistently clear. Give each paragraph one main purpose, connect each reason to the relevant side of the question, and use pronouns only when their reference is unmistakable.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “assignments,” “self study habits,” “stressed,” and “physically and mentally.” This gives you enough language to communicate the general subject, but the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice, spelling and collocation errors make parts less clear. For example, “from the prospective of the kids” appears to mean “from the perspective of the children,” and “studing” is misspelled. Phrases such as “give much more time to there kids” and “drive them away from there studies” are understandable but not natural or precise. Work on accurate topic phrases and check spelling and word forms; this will make your reasons easier to understand and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a complex explanation beginning “because the holidays help children to get less stressed.” However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty. Errors occur frequently in agreement and verb forms: “Students gets” should be “Students get,” and “they taking a small break” needs a finite verb, such as “they think taking a short break.” There are also repeated errors with possessives and sentence boundaries, as in “there children” and “kids.Because.” These patterns sometimes make the reader pause to interpret the meaning. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, possessive forms, and complete sentences, then use shorter, accurately punctuated sentences before adding more complex structures.
