Student answer (Band 6.0)

Summer holidays in schools are very common across the globe. Primary and secondary schools close for two or more months in many countries during summer. These long holidays give childern a chance to travel, spend more time with parents, and develop new skills and hobbies. While many people argue in favor of shorter holidays stating this maintains students' routine.

Long summer breaks are vital for students to understand the life outside school. Most parents take their kids for travel during long summer holidays which helps them understand and navigate life from a different prespective. Many students develop new hobbies and engage in productive activities like swimming, cycling and crafting to better utlilize their free time. The prime illustration of this is my case when I learned swimming during 3 months of summer break at my secondary school.

Arguments in favour of shorter school holidays always revolove around disciplinery shifts in students' habits like waking up till late at night and so on. Many students find it hard to adjust back to school routine after longer holidays. We too felt it hard to go to school after summer holidays but arguing that shorter breaks help students adopt to professional life better later in life is a misconception.

In conclusion, while shorter holidays help students maintain their routine, the positive gains of longer holidays can never be neglected. Atmost, it takes a week or two for students to adjust back to the school routine but the bond they develop with parents during the time spent at home is something they will chehrish for life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both questions and maintain a clear preference for the benefits of longer holidays. The discussion of travel, family time and hobbies is relevant, and your swimming experience gives one point a concrete example. However, the value of long holidays is developed more fully than the case for shorter ones: you mention routine and readjustment, but do not explain in much detail how shorter breaks might support learning, reduce loss of academic progress, or help working parents. The final paragraph also largely repeats your position rather than adding support. To strengthen the response, explain the opposing arguments fairly and extend each main point with a reason or example before stating why you find the benefits of long holidays more persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two sides, and a conclusion. The progression from the benefits of long breaks to arguments for shorter ones is easy to follow, and phrases such as “In conclusion” signal the final position. This coherent arrangement is a strength. Some connections between ideas are less smooth, however. The opening sentence of the shorter-holiday paragraph introduces “disciplinary shifts” but then moves quickly to readjustment and professional life, without clearly linking these points. The contrast in the introduction is also compressed into a sentence fragment beginning “While.” Develop each paragraph around a clear central claim and use linking phrases to show how each supporting detail relates to it; this would make cohesion more natural and less abrupt.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “develop new skills and hobbies,” “productive activities,” “maintain their routine,” and “adjust back to school routine.” These phrases communicate the main ideas, and some topic-specific wording helps the response feel relevant. There are also several spelling errors, including “childern,” “prespective,” “utlilize,” “revolove,” and “chehrish,” as well as inaccurate or awkward choices such as “disciplinery shifts” and “adopt to professional life.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Proofread spelling carefully and choose collocations that express the intended meaning directly; for example, describe students as “readjusting to school routines” rather than “adopting to professional life.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “activities like swimming, cycling and crafting to better utilize their free time” and a concessive structure in the conclusion. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors are present. The opening ends with the incomplete construction “While many people argue in favor of shorter holidays stating this maintains students' routine,” which needs a main clause or a clearer sentence structure. In “Most parents take their kids for travel,” the pattern is not grammatical, and “after longer holidays” would be clearer with an article or plural form. The sentence about “arguing that shorter breaks help…” is also difficult to parse. Review sentence boundaries and clause structure, and check articles and plural forms when editing.
