Student answer (Band 6.0)

Vacations are the basic requirements for human being including students and employeers. In most countries, government make compulsory to give longer holidays in summer and so school does. As far as I know, longer holidays have both benefits and drawbacks. It is advantageous to students by spending quality time with family and take rest form academics; however, they may lost the habit of regular study and became lazy.

In summer, students of primary and secondary got more than a month holidays in summer. It is a crucial time for those students to spent hours with family menmber, sharing bonds and learn household activities. Learning extra activities is necessary because it is crucial to survive later in future like cooking, communication, etc. Moreover, children can spend time travelling. For example, they can go hiking, visit new places and also in relatives.

In contrast, longer holidays make students lazy and cutoff from their regular habits of going school, reading and writing. In some cases, primary school students completely forget about their study. To complement their study routine, educational institution should provide them with study materials which continuously supports them to develop the habit of learning. For instance, in my school, during vacations, they provide us with descent amount of assignment. It help us to memorize the content and keep us quiet busy.

To conclude, it is necessary to provide holidays to students. Holidays offers students a chance to explore things other than study but the holidays must includes some activities which will keep them reminding about school.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both questions by explaining the benefits of extended breaks—family time, rest, travel and learning practical activities—and by presenting a case for shorter holidays through the risk of losing study habits. Your position is clear in the introduction and conclusion: holidays are valuable, but some learning activity should continue. The examples about hiking and assignments help make the points relevant. However, the second question is not fully developed: the response mainly describes drawbacks of long holidays and suggests assignments, rather than explaining more directly why shorter breaks are preferable, such as maintaining learning continuity or reducing the need to relearn material. Some benefits, including rest, are mentioned but not explored further. Develop each side with a clearer explanation of its effects and a specific supporting example to strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for benefits and drawbacks, and a concluding summary. The contrast marker “In contrast” helps signal the shift between the two main sides, while examples are placed alongside the relevant ideas. This makes the argument generally easy to follow. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes loose: the benefits paragraph moves from family relationships to practical skills and then travel without clearly linking these points to the value of a long break. Some connections are also mechanical, and references such as “they” in “they provide us” require the reader to infer the school as the subject. Use clearer topic sentences and linking explanations to show how each example supports the main point, and make references explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “compulsory,” “household activities,” “regular habits,” and “memorize the content,” and the reader can understand the main ideas. There are also attempts to express more specific concepts, such as “sharing bonds” and “study routine.” However, inaccurate word choice, collocation and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make phrases awkward: “cutoff from their regular habits,” “descent amount of assignment,” and “keep us quiet busy.” Some word forms are also unsuitable, as in “employeers” and “menmber.” Aim for more natural combinations and check spelling and word forms carefully. For example, “spend time with relatives” is more idiomatic than “in relatives,” and “a substantial amount of homework” would express the assignment example more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including the contrast structure “Holidays offers students a chance … but …” and the sentence beginning “For example.” Meaning is generally recoverable, and the response is organised into complete sentences. However, some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction remain. For instance, “government make” needs a singular verb, “students … got more than a month holidays” has an unclear tense and missing article, and “It help us” should agree with its subject. The final sentence also needs agreement in “Holidays offers” and “must includes.” Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and correctly matched verb, and review articles and plural forms. More accurate complex sentences would improve control without sacrificing clarity.
