Student answer (Band 5.0)

Yes,this is one of the interesting topics to discuss. Most of the primary and secondary schools closes for more than two months in the summer holidays in many countries. There are multiple reasons behind this.Lets discuss why this is invented and what are the arguments in favour of shorter school holidays.

In many countries, primary and secondary schools have closed for almost two months in the name of summer holidays.Firstly, this is because of the heat levels in summer. In summer, there is so much heat which does not hepls to children to concentrate on their studies. And by exposing to severe heat,it will effect the health of the children.Additionally, another main reason for this is,studying whole year will be more stressful for the children at their age.By giving a little gap for their studies will help them to enjoy their most playtime, their minds will be fresh for another academic year. Thus, these long school holidays are more valuable for children and for parents also.

Shorter school holidays refer by random festival holidays such as new year, christmas and so on.These shorter holidays will give opportunities for children to enjoy their festivals and to learn their cultures. The period of these holidays is for 2-3 days. However, some schools may not give holidays for any occasions as shorter holidays which leads to many arguments from parents to the authorities of the schools. They demand these holidays to celebrate their special moments with their children. In my school days,my school principal also did not give any permission for these holidays. Then, most of the parents argued with the principal.

In conclusion,It is important to give holidays for schools.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify reasons for long summer breaks, including heat and the need for children to rest, and you include a personal example about your school’s festival holidays. However, the response only partially addresses the question: the second part asks for arguments in favour of shorter school holidays, but you mainly describe short festival breaks and complaints when schools do not grant them. This does not explain why the main summer holiday itself should be shorter. The opening promises to discuss both issues, but the conclusion only says that holidays are important and does not state a clear position or summarise the arguments. To strengthen the response, directly compare the benefits of long breaks with reasons for shortening the summer break, such as maintaining learning continuity or easing childcare pressures, and support each point.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph about long holidays, a paragraph about shorter breaks, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Additionally,” and “In conclusion” help signal movement between points. However, progression is limited because the second body paragraph shifts from shorter summer holidays to festival holidays, so its connection to the task is not always clear. Some linking is repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “In summer” and “Additionally.” The conclusion is too brief to bring the discussion together. Improve cohesion by giving each paragraph one clear purpose, using references that connect ideas precisely, and ending with a summary that answers both questions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate basic ideas, including “severe heat,” “academic year,” “festivals,” and “cultures.” There are also attempts to express cause and effect, such as “does not help children to concentrate” and “leads to many arguments.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, which sometimes makes the reader work to understand the point. For example, “in the name of summer holidays” and “enjoy their most playtime” are not natural expressions, while “shorter school holidays refer by random festival holidays” does not clearly convey your meaning. Aim for precise phrases such as “summer break,” “time for recreation,” and “public holidays,” and check spelling and word forms before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, using structures such as “By giving a little gap … will help them” and “which leads to many arguments.” This shows an effort to connect ideas, but complex constructions are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. Examples include “schools closes,” where the verb does not agree with the plural subject, and “it will effect the health,” where the sentence pattern and verb form are incorrect. There are also problems with articles, sentence boundaries, and punctuation, as in “Yes,this” and “In conclusion,It.” Practise building accurate sentences with a clear subject and verb, and review agreement, articles, and punctuation. Then use longer clauses only when you can control their structure.
