IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagrams illustrate the information about a public library in a town known as Little Chalfont.
Overall, the children's fiction and the adult fiction showed the highest percentage whereas the children's DVDs represented the lowest percentage of the total loans. If we talk about the total number of loans, in 2007 there was lesser number of loans while in 2016, the number of loans exceeded and remained at peak.
First of all, Pie charts is showing the ages of library members. 51% people was involved whose ages were 18 to 64. More then 65 years people showed little percentage(12). Children's fiction and adult fiction illustrated the same percentage

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify relevant features, including the equal 38% shares for children’s and adult fiction, children’s DVDs as the smallest loan category, and the rise in total loans from 2007 to 2016. However, the response addresses the charts only partially: it gives almost no account of the loan trend’s fluctuations or the other loan categories, and the overview’s claim that loans “remained at peak” is not supported because 2016 is the highest point shown, not a sustained peak. The age figures are also confused: 51% refers to members aged 18–64, while the sentence about “More then 65 years” misstates the 12% group, which is adults aged 65 and over. The response is 100 words, below the required 150; develop the main comparisons and report more key data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic sequence: an introduction, an overview, and then an attempt to describe chart details. Linking phrases such as “Overall” and “First of all” help signal these stages. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph stops abruptly after “Children’s fiction and adult fiction illustrated the same percentage,” without completing the comparison or moving through the remaining information. The overview also combines the loan trend and category shares in a way that does not clearly organise the three visuals. Use separate, complete paragraphs for the overview and the key details, and connect each point to the relevant chart. This would make the organisation clearer and reduce the sense of disconnected statements.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentage,” “total loans,” “library members,” and “represented,” so the reader can identify the subject of most statements. There is also an attempt to vary wording with “illustrate” and “showed.” However, several choices are awkward or imprecise, such as “lesser number of loans,” “remained at peak,” and “people was involved.” “More then 65 years” does not accurately name the age group and includes a spelling error. The limited range also leads to repetition of “percentage” and “loans.” Aim for precise chart language such as “the lowest share,” “the total rose,” and “members aged 65 and over,” and use verbs like “accounted for” to describe proportions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response includes simple statements and an attempt at a longer comparison, for example, “If we talk about the total number of loans, in 2007…” However, the range is limited, and frequent errors affect accuracy. In “Pie charts is showing,” the plural subject does not agree with the verb, and the present progressive is unsuitable for describing a completed 2016 chart. “51% people was involved” has problems with the article and subject–verb agreement; a clearer form is “People aged 18 to 64 made up 51%.” The sentence beginning “Overall” also has a faulty construction around “showed the highest percentage.” Use accurate past-tense reporting and practise complete sentences with correct agreement, articles, and punctuation.
