IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The given survey was conducted in the Chalfront Library in 2016. The information is based on catagorising the participants in four different catagories. There are three different parametres for illustrating the Member's age, rate of loans taken by each catagory and the total figure of loans taken.
First of all, the pie chart provides that the nearly half of the membership is gained by adults aging from 18-64 and the rest is shared by children, young adults and the old-aged people.
The loans are taken around 38% for fiction wheather it is for kids or adults each.
The trends are highest at 20000 in most of the years but it

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
You identify the three kinds of information and report two relevant features: adults aged 18–64 form the largest membership group, and adult and children’s fiction each account for 38% of loans. However, the response covers the charts only partially. The age figures are not stated accurately or in detail, and the loan trend is left unfinished: “it” has no conclusion, while the chart shows loans rising overall from about 15,700 in 2007 to 21,700 in 2016, with fluctuations. The claim that the total was “highest at 20000 in most of the years” does not match the data. The response is also 40 words below the required minimum, limiting the detail and comparisons you can provide. Include a clear overview and report the main figures and trend.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the opening introduces the charts, followed by comments on membership, loan categories and the time trend. Phrases such as “First of all” signal a transition, and the ideas are generally related to the task. However, the progression is not sustained. The final sentence stops at “but it,” leaving the trend discussion incomplete, and the short paragraphs do not develop a clear overview or connect the three sets of data. Some linking is also awkward, as in “The loans are taken around 38% for fiction.” Use a complete overview first, then group related comparisons into paragraphs and use clear links such as “By contrast” or “Over the period.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “membership,” “fiction,” “participants” and “trends,” and the reader can identify the general subject of each chart. There is also an attempt to vary wording with “total figure” and “rate of loans.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing statistical data: “the membership is gained by adults” and “loans are taken” do not express the intended relationships clearly. Spelling errors such as “catagorising,” “catagories” and “wheather” are noticeable, while “old-aged people” is not an appropriate chart label. Build a more precise range of terms for proportions and changes, such as “accounted for,” “share,” “rose” and “fluctuated.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response includes both simple statements and attempts at longer structures, for example, “the rest is shared by children, young adults and the old-aged people.” This shows some ability to form connected clauses, and the main topic is usually understandable. However, grammatical control is uneven. In “the nearly half of the membership,” the article and word order are faulty; “adults aging from 18-64” uses an unsuitable verb form in the clause; and “The trends are highest at 20000 in most of the years but it” is incomplete and does not form a clear comparison. The opening sentence also uses an awkward passive construction. Practise accurate comparative sentences and complete clauses, checking articles, verb forms and punctuation before finishing.
