Student answer (Band 8.0)

The pie chart illustrates the proportions of the age of the members of Little Chalfont Library, a public library, while the bar chart shows the total number of loans between 2007 and 2016 and the table shows the total loans, from the library, by category in 2016.

Overall, the pie chart highlights the majority of the library’s members in 2016 are adults aged 18 to 64 and the least are adults aged 65 and older. Whereas, the bar chart shows the highest total number of loans from the library is in 2016 and the least in 2007. Furthermore, children’s fiction and Adult fiction were the dominant category of loans in 2016 compared to children’s DVDs in the same year.

In terms of the age of the library members in 2016, adults aged 18-65 make up 51% of the total library members compared to only 12% of adults aged 65 and over. Children make the second largest proportion of the library members at 22% followed by 12% young adults aged 13-17.

In terms of library loans, 2016 recorded the largest number of loans with approximately 22,000 in contrast to only around 16,000 in 2007. By catogery, total loans in 2016 consisted mostly of children’s fiction and Adult fiction with 38% respectively and the least loaned items were children’s DVDs with only 1%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three visual components of the task. You provided a clear overview of the main trends and supported your points with relevant data from the charts. The comparison between the age groups and the loan categories is well-handled. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurately transcribed; for instance, you noted 'adults aged 18-65' while the chart specifies '18-64', and you mentioned '38% respectively' for two categories, which is a good use of comparative language. Overall, the response is well-structured and covers the requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs focusing on specific data sets. You use cohesive devices such as 'In terms of', 'Furthermore', and 'in contrast to' to guide the reader through the information. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different charts. To improve, ensure that the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is slightly more fluid, but overall, the structure is very effective and meets the criteria for a high band.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'dominant category', 'proportions of the age', and 'recorded the largest number' are appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. There is a minor spelling error ('catogery' instead of 'category'), but this does not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'loans' or 'members' to avoid repetition, and use more precise collocations when describing statistical trends. Your current range is adequate and functional for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy reading. There are minor issues with punctuation and article usage, such as 'the proportions of the age of the members' which is slightly clunky. However, these errors are infrequent and do not cause any misunderstanding. Your control over grammar is generally strong, and you successfully use comparative structures to contrast the data points. Continued practice with complex sentence variety will help you reach the next level.
