IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The three charts illustrate the age of individuals (2016), and the total loans by category (2016), the total figure of loans ([redacted phone]) in a Little Chalfont Library, respectively.
Overall, it is evident that the majority of the population, who were serving in the library, were adults and they mostly obtained loans in the category of children's and adult fiction in 2016. Similarly, the total number of loans fluctuated throughout the period between 2007 and 2016.
The first graphic depicts that the age of the community in the library, is divided four pieces and there were usually children and adults. It also demonstrates that young adults and the population aged over 65 were not interested in reading books at the library.
In the second graph which is a table depicts the total loans separating into categories. The fiction books were comprising the majority of loans in 2016.
The final graphic manifests that the total figure of loans rose gradually from 2007 to 2011 whereas there was a dip between 2011 and 2013. The total amount of loans finally recovered and reached the peak 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the three charts, including the age distribution, loan categories, and the trend over time. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, you mention the age groups but do not provide specific data points or make meaningful comparisons between them. Similarly, when discussing the loan trends, you describe the movement but fail to include specific figures from the graph to support your observations. To reach a higher band, ensure you select key data points to illustrate your points rather than just describing the general shape of the graphs. The overview is present but could be more analytical regarding the relationships between the data sets.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs for each chart. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'In the second graph', and 'The final graphic', which helps guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'the age of the community in the library, is divided four pieces'. Improving the flow between sentences and using a wider variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuated', 'comprising', and 'gradually'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'total figure of loans' (instead of 'total number') and 'the age of the community in the library, is divided four pieces' (which is awkward phrasing). To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring that your word choices are natural in the context of describing statistical data. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, but lacks the precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the age of the community in the library, is divided four pieces' (missing preposition 'into') and 'the total figure of loans... reached the peak 2016' (missing preposition 'in'). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as unnecessary commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions when describing data trends.
