Student answer (Band 6.5)

The three charts illustrate the age of individuals (2016), and the total loans by category (2016), , the total figure of loans ([redacted phone]) in a Little Chalfont Library, respectively.

Overall, it is evident that the majority of the population, who were using in the library, were adults and they mostly obtained loans in the category of children's and adult fiction in 2016. Similarly, the total number of loans fluctuated throughout the period between 2007 and 2016.

The first graphic depicts that the age of the community in the library is divided into four pieces and there were usually children and adults. It also demonstrates that young adults and the population aged over 65 were not interested in reading books at the library.

The second graph which is a table depicts the total loans separating into categories. The fiction books were comprising the majority of loans in 2016.

The final graphic manifests that the total figure of loans rose gradually from 2007 to 2011 whereas there was a dip between 2011 and 2013. The total amount of loans finally recovered and reached the peak in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all three charts, but the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you identify the main trends, such as the fluctuation in loans and the dominance of fiction, the description of the age demographic is vague. For instance, stating there were 'usually children and adults' lacks the precision required for a Band 7+ response. You should have explicitly referenced the specific percentages or proportions provided in the pie chart to support your claims. Furthermore, the comparison between categories in the table could be more detailed by highlighting the significant gap between fiction and non-fiction loans. To improve, ensure you provide data-driven evidence for every trend you identify.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'similarly', 'whereas', and 'finally', which help the flow of information. However, the paragraphing is slightly disjointed, particularly the very short paragraph regarding the second graph. The transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus that connects back to the overall trend described in the introduction.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety expected at higher levels. Phrases like 'total figure of loans' and 'first graphic depicts' are functional but repetitive. You rely on basic verbs such as 'depicts', 'demonstrates', and 'manifests'. To improve, incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'accounted for', 'constituted', 'witnessed a decline', or 'experienced a recovery'. Avoid using informal phrasing like 'pieces' when referring to segments of a pie chart; 'proportions' or 'segments' would be more appropriate in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a positive start. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies that occasionally hinder clarity. For example, 'the majority of the population, who were using in the library' is awkward and grammatically incorrect. You also have issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'separating into categories' instead of 'separated into categories'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of passive voice, which is essential for describing data trends.
