Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to summarize the data, but it fails to accurately interpret the charts provided. The student confuses the subject matter (referring to 'English courses' instead of a 'public library') and struggles to identify the main features. The data points mentioned are often unclear or incorrectly attributed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the trends. While there is an attempt at an overview, it is confusing and lacks a clear summary of the key differences or trends. To improve, focus on accurately describing the specific categories and timeframes presented in the visual data rather than making general, unsupported statements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression of ideas is frequently interrupted by unclear referencing and awkward transitions. For example, phrases like 'To began with' and 'As similar' are used incorrectly, which hinders the flow. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, making the relationship between the data points difficult to discern. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus and that linking words are used to connect ideas logically rather than just acting as placeholders at the start of sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'arrival had the recorded largest share' and 'pre-booked with agent had the gradually changes'. These errors sometimes make the meaning ambiguous. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific language, the lack of precision prevents a higher score. To improve, focus on learning common collocations used in data description, such as 'a significant increase,' 'remained stable,' or 'accounted for,' and ensure that the terminology matches the specific labels provided in the charts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('other stayed stable'), incorrect verb forms ('To began with'), and awkward phrasing ('Australia represent only 11% by pre-booked'). Punctuation is also problematic, with fragments and misplaced periods. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors requires the reader to work harder to interpret the intended message. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the clarity of the writing.
