Student answer (Band 8.0)

The charts depict different information related to a public library in Little Chalfont including the age diversity of its library members in 2016, proportion of borrowing of different categories of resources in that year and the trend of total number of loans from 2007 to 2016.

Overall, the majority of library members is comprised of the adults in the age range of 18 to 64. Likewise, there is an increasing trend in the total number of loans being made, while children's fiction is the most popular resources being borrowed.

In 2016, the Little Chalfont library, had more than half of its members as adults between 18 and 64. This was followed by children who comprised 22%, while younger adults in the range of 13 to 17 and adults over 65 occupied 15% and 12% of total proportion respectively. Furthermore, in the same year, total loans by category indicated children's fictions and adult's fictions to be the resources borrowed the most with each being borrowed by 38%. Meanwhile, children's DVDs, adult audio books, and young adults were loaned the least (under 3%).

Finally, the total number of loans being made from that library seems to be on an increasing trend, where around 16,000 loans were made in 2007 and increased to over 20,000 by 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all parts of the task by summarizing the three charts provided. You identified the main features, such as the dominant age group of library members and the upward trend in loans, and made relevant comparisons between categories. The data is accurately reported, and you have provided a clear overview in the second paragraph. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently distinguish between the different types of data (e.g., percentages vs. absolute numbers) and perhaps provide a more nuanced comparison of the categories that showed the least activity, rather than just listing them.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group the information by chart type. You use cohesive devices such as 'Likewise', 'Furthermore', and 'Meanwhile' effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the library's data. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the membership demographics to the borrowing categories and finally the historical trend. The flow is smooth, and the referencing is generally accurate throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information precisely, using terms like 'age diversity', 'proportion', and 'increasing trend'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'most popular resources being borrowed' (which is slightly redundant) and 'adult's fictions' (where the possessive is unnecessary). However, these do not impede communication. You successfully use a variety of reporting language suitable for an Academic Task 1 response. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and avoiding unnecessary pluralization of uncountable nouns like 'fiction'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar and punctuation is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as the unnecessary comma after 'Little Chalfont library' and the slightly awkward phrasing 'total loans by category indicated children's fictions... to be the resources'. Despite these small issues, your grammatical control is consistent, and the meaning is always clear. You demonstrate the ability to use complex structures like relative clauses and participial phrases with good accuracy.
