Student answer (Band 7.0)

Little Chalfont Library data is represented through three different charts. The pie chart gives information about members age. The bar chart shows the evolution of total number of loans through the years while the table gives information about category loans. Overall, we notice two outstanding categories along with an increase in the loans throughout the span of the chart years with a tendency of older people loaning the most.

In fact, beside some fluctuation around the year 2013, where we can see a slight dip, and a stabilization of loans from 2008 to 2009. The global trend is increasing as from the 2007 to 2016 span of years loans increased by about a number of 6000. An other major tendency is that older people seem to loan the most as 63% from those who borrow books are over the age of 18 with a majority of people that are 16 to 64 years old.

About the categories that the library loans the most, we find out that fiction is the most borrowed one with 76 out of 100 books about fiction. Whether it is children fiction or adult fiction both share similar percentages. However, other categories for instance non-fiction, audio books or DVD's are less popular sharing the rest of the 24 per cent of the loans.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the three charts and provided a clear overview. You covered the age demographics, the loan trends over time, and the breakdown by category. However, the analysis could be improved by being more precise with the data. For example, stating 'loans increased by about a number of 6000' is slightly vague; referencing the specific start and end points (e.g., from approximately 14,000 to 20,000) would be more accurate. Additionally, the statement that 'older people loan the most' is slightly inaccurate, as the 16-64 age group is the largest segment. Ensure you distinguish between 'older' and 'adult' categories more carefully to avoid misinterpretation of the data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In fact', and 'However' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as starting a sentence with 'In fact, beside some fluctuation...' which creates a fragmented sentence structure. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Using a wider variety of cohesive devices would help improve the logical progression of your ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, using terms like 'stabilization', 'fluctuation', and 'outstanding categories'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, 'loaning the most' is better expressed as 'borrowing the most', as 'loaning' usually refers to the act of giving. You also use 'a number of 6000', which is slightly unnatural phrasing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise reporting verbs and nouns related to data trends would elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'members age' (should be 'members' ages'), 'an increase in the loans' (should be 'an increase in loans'), and 'An other' (should be 'Another'). There are also punctuation issues, such as the sentence fragment starting with 'In fact, beside some fluctuation...'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence boundary control will improve your accuracy.
