Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the charts, including library membership, loan categories, and trends over time. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, cohesive overview of the data. While the key figures are identified, the comparison between categories is occasionally imprecise (e.g., stating 'Childrens fiction and adult fiction were approximately same' without clearly referencing the specific data points). To improve, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant trends rather than just listing statistics, and ensure all comparisons are explicitly supported by the provided data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the different sections of the data. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and occasionally awkward, such as the repeated use of 'On the other hand' to introduce new paragraphs, which does not always fit the logical flow of the information. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the transition between the different charts could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'the latter', 'this figure') is used more effectively would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the charts with basic accuracy. There are some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'remained same in ratio' instead of 'remained stable' or 'proportion'. Additionally, there are minor errors in terminology, such as 'Childrens fiction' (missing apostrophe) and 'loan by category'. While the range is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. Using more varied descriptors for trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained constant', would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Children was around 22%') and article usage (e.g., 'in the library member'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing apostrophes in possessives like 'Childrens'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the information, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and pluralisation would significantly improve the accuracy of the response.
