Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart illustrates the information about age and numbers of members of the little Chalfont library in 2016, while the bar chart and the table provide data about the total number of loans and their percentages from the library between 2007 and 2016.

Overall, the age of adults between 18-64 accounted for the largest share of the members, followed by children. However, young adults (13-17) and adults 65 and over accounted for the lowest share of library members'.

From the pie chart the highest number of members were from age group of adults 18-64, followed by children group at 22 members. The number of members further decreased to 15 for young adults 13-17 and reached all time lowest for adults (65 and over) at 12.

The table of total loans divided into 7 categories in 2016 provides information about the largest loans of children's fiction and adult fiction at 38%, and the lowest loans taken on children's Dvds, adult audiobooks and young adults at 1% and 2% respectively with same percentages for the latter two. As for the adult non-fiction and children's non-fiction the percentages are as 13% and 6% respectively.

The bar chart shows the total number of loan from 2007 to 2016 in different numbers with 2016 being the year of the highest loans done in the whole time period at about 23000, followed by the year 2015 and 2014 at 22000 and 21000 respectively. The year 2010 and 2011 are having same number of loans as that of the year 2014 and 2015 respectively. The year 2007 showed least numbers of loans at 16000 with increase followed in both 2008 and 2009 at 18000. The loans in the year 2013 were at 19000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of all three charts. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with data from the pie chart, table, and bar chart. However, the response could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the data sets rather than describing each chart in isolation. For instance, you could have linked the high number of adult members to the high percentage of adult fiction loans. Additionally, ensure that all data points are accurate; for example, you mentioned 22 members for children, but the chart shows 35. Precision in data reporting is essential for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific chart. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'As for', which help the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the connection between the paragraphs could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but ensure that your paragraphing remains consistent. The structure is sufficient to present the information clearly, but more sophisticated linking words would enhance the flow of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accounted for', 'share', and 'categories'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'total number of loan' (should be 'loans') and 'lowest loans taken on' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). You attempt to use a variety of words, but the range is somewhat limited. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing when describing trends or data points.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the year 2010 and 2011 are having same number' (should be 'had the same number') and 'the year 2007 showed least numbers' (should be 'the least number'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are occasional slips. The errors do not impede communication, but they do occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
