IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

There are three charts provided about the Little Chalfont library. They provide information on the age of the library members, the total loans by category of books and the total number of loans throughout the years.

In the year 2016, 51% of the library members were adults in the age range of 18 to 64. Children made up 22% of the total members followed by young adults aged 13 to 17 years at 15%. Adults 65 and over made up the last 12%.

In the year 2016, the largest fraction of the loans was spend on children's fiction and adult fiction, both at 38%. This is followed by adult non-fiction at 13%. Other categories such as children's non-fiction, young adults, adult audiobooks and children's DVDs claim smaller fractions of the total loans.

The total number of loans has seen a gradual, although not a monotonic increase over the years 2007 to 2016. It was just over 15000 in the year 2007 and is about 21000 in the year 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all three charts provided, identifying the main features and trends. You have successfully extracted key data points, such as the age distribution in 2016 and the overall growth in loans. However, to reach a higher band, you should aim for more analytical comparisons rather than just listing data. For instance, noting that the combined fiction categories account for over 75% of loans would provide a stronger synthesis. Additionally, while you mention the trend in total loans, you could have highlighted the specific fluctuations or the peak years more clearly to demonstrate a more comprehensive overview of the data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction and separate paragraphs for each chart. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In the year 2016' and 'This is followed by', which help guide the reader. However, the transitions between sentences could be more varied to improve the flow. Some sentences feel slightly mechanical, and the use of linking words could be more sophisticated to connect ideas more fluidly across the paragraphs. Overall, the structure is sound and serves the purpose of the report well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'monotonic increase', 'fraction', and 'category' correctly. The language is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms to avoid repetition of words like 'loans' and 'members'. For example, you could use 'borrowing figures' or 'library patrons'. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items would help elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are minor issues, such as 'loans was spend' (should be 'spent') and 'throughout the years' (which is slightly unnatural; 'over the period' is better). These errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or relative clauses, more consistently throughout the text to demonstrate greater flexibility.
