Student answer (Band 7.5)

The given charts provide information about the Little Chalfont Library.

To begin with, it can be seen that the pie chart depicts information on the age of library members in 2016. Firstly, the maximum percentage of people, that is, 51% were adults ( between the age of 18-64. ) Secondly, 12% and 15% of the people were adults aged 65 and over and young adults (13-17 years ) respectively. Lastly, 22% people were children.

The second chart is a table showing the total loans taken by the library by category in the same year. The maximum percentage of loan was taken for children's and adult's fiction, both of which were 38% each, followed by 13% on adult non-fiction and 6% on children's non-fiction. Lastly only about 1-2% of the loan was taken for children's DVDs, young adult books and adult audio books each.

Finally, the bar graph depicts the amount of loans taken between 2007 and 2016. Overall, the graph has remained on the same range throughout the years with just a little occasional fluctuation. In 2007, around 15500 loans were taken. This number increased to 19000 and remained the same until 2009. After that, there was seen an increase again until 2011. However after that there was a steady decline and the number reached to around 19500 in 2013. Then once again, there was a rise and the number finally settled at 22,000 loans in the year 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response covers all three charts provided in the prompt. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the dominant age group (adults) and the most popular loan categories (fiction). You also made relevant comparisons, such as noting the equal percentages for adult and children's fiction. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that the overview is more distinct. While you have a concluding paragraph, an overview should ideally be placed after the introduction to highlight the most significant trends across all three data sets. The data reporting is generally accurate, though ensure that the distinction between percentages and raw numbers is always clear.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific chart. You use transition signals like 'To begin with', 'Secondly', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the information. However, some of the cohesive devices feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is clear, but the connection between the charts could be strengthened by using more varied linking phrases. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the information within each paragraph flows well. To improve, try to integrate more sophisticated referencing to avoid repeating the same sentence structures when introducing new data points.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. You use terms like 'fluctuation', 'steady decline', and 'depicts' appropriately. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic descriptors. For instance, 'maximum percentage' is used twice in close proximity. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' (e.g., 'surged', 'dipped', 'remained stable') and use more precise collocations when describing data trends. The spelling is accurate throughout the response, which is a positive aspect of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor errors, such as 'the number reached to around 19500' (should be 'reached around') and 'the graph has remained on the same range' (should be 'within the same range'). Punctuation is generally handled well, although the placement of parentheses around 'between the age of 18-64' is unnecessary and interrupts the flow of the sentence. While your grammar is generally clear and does not impede communication, increasing the variety of complex sentence structures and ensuring more precise preposition usage would help elevate your score.
