IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The given charts illustrate data on the public library of a town by the name Little Chalfont. Secondly, the information presented also comprises statistics on the age of library members in the form of a pie chart and total loans by category in the form of a table, both for the year 2016. In addition, a bar graph is used to present data on the total number of loans for the years starting 2007 to 2016.
The library members comprise children who account for twenty-two percent of members, young adults aged thirteen to seventeen accounting for fifteen percent of all members, as well as adults aged eighteen to sixty-four, who are the largest group of library members and account for fifty-one percent, and at-last adults aged sixty-five and over, who are only twelve percent of all users.
Furthermore, children's fiction and adult fiction genres each have the largest allotment of thirty-eight percent loans in their accounts.
However, other less popular categories such as children's non-fiction, children's DVDs, young adults, adult non-fiction, and adult audio books, have loan percentages of six, one, two, thirteen, and two percent, respectively.
At last, the number of loans is the highest in the year 2016. However, for most of the years since 2010, we have had over 20,000 loans except in 2013. In addition, the 2007 had roughly 15,000, which is the least number of loans in the entire graph. Although the following two years, 2008 and 2009, had a constant number of loans allotted.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of all three charts. You provided a clear overview of the library membership, loan categories, and the trend over time. However, the response lacks a cohesive 'overview' paragraph that synthesizes the data. While you have reported the figures accurately, the comparison between categories could be more analytical. For instance, instead of just listing percentages, you could highlight that fiction genres dominate the library's circulation. The task is addressed well, but the lack of a distinct summary paragraph prevents a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'In addition' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The use of 'At last' to introduce the final paragraph is unnatural in this context; 'Finally' or 'Regarding the trend' would be more appropriate. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied referencing to avoid repetitive sentence structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'allotment', 'statistics', and 'genres' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'allotted' when referring to the number of loans, which is slightly imprecise. You also rely on simple phrasing in some areas. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations related to data description, such as 'accounted for the majority' or 'experienced a steady increase'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly without significant errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the 2007 had roughly 15,000' (should be 'the year 2007 saw') and 'the years starting 2007 to 2016' (should be 'from 2007 to 2016'). Additionally, the phrase 'by the name Little Chalfont' is slightly awkward; 'called Little Chalfont' or 'in Little Chalfont' would be more natural. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication, and you show a reasonable level of control over basic sentence construction.
