Student answer (Band 6.5)

The three provided charts, consisting of a pie graph, a table and a bar graph, illustrate information about the age of library members in 2016, the total percentage of loans by genre on the same year, and the total number of loans from 2007 to 2016.

Overall, adults aged 18-64 years old were the largest group of library users, while adults aging 65-and-over represented the lowest proportion in 2016. Meanwhile, both children's and adult fiction represented the biggest percentage of borrowed books by category, while children’s DVDs recounted for the lowest genre being borrowed on the same year. In contrast, the total number of loans reached its highest in 2016.

Regarding the age of library members, adults aged 18-64 represented the highest proportion of 51%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, as it is only 125 words long. This significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the response. While you have identified the main features of the charts, the analysis is incomplete. You provided an overview and started describing the age demographics, but you failed to detail the table and bar graph data entirely. To achieve a higher band, you must ensure all parts of the task are addressed and that you provide a comprehensive summary of all data sets presented in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and the beginning of a body paragraph. You use cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'In contrast', and 'Regarding' to link ideas. However, because the response is incomplete, the overall progression is cut short. The paragraphing is appropriate for the length provided, but the lack of further development means the coherence of the entire report is limited. To improve, ensure you have enough content to support a full structure with distinct paragraphs for each chart or thematic comparison.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'illustrate', and 'demographics'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'recounted for' instead of 'accounted for' and 'aging' instead of 'aged'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the opening sentence which effectively combines information. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'on the same year' (should be 'in the same year') and 'adults aging 65-and-over' (should be 'aged 65 and over'). Despite these errors, your meaning is generally clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, aim for more error-free complex sentences and ensure consistent control over prepositions and verb forms.
