IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The tables illustrate the members of different age in library, the items borrowed in 2016 and total numbers of loans by the members between 2007 and 2016.

Overall, members of age 18-64 constitute the highest proportions at 51% in library, whereas, fictional books were borrowed by users at 38%. Moreover, the trend of loans showed a gradual increase over the period despite a minute fall in the year 2013.

The pie chart represented that majority of members in the library were of age 18-64% consisting of half of the users. Children ranked second at 22%. Whereas, adults of age 13-17 and adults over 65 were rather lower in percentage at 15% and 12% respectively.

Moving to the table, in 2016, fictional books reported the same proportions at 38% making it largest among all, followed by adults non fiction books at 13%. In contrast, children's non fiction books had 6%, audio books had 2% and DVDs at 1% making it the least in ranking.

The bar chart reported that in 2007, the sum of borrowed item was 15000, which showed a rise over the years, reaching above 20000 in 2012. In 2013, although, there was a fall noticed, the values continued to increase before reaching its peak in 2016.

Overall, the structure is sound and supports the information presented.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'constitute', 'proportions', 'gradual increase', and 'peak'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'members of different age in library' (should be 'age groups') and 'sum of borrowed item' (should be 'total number of items borrowed'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and ensuring that nouns and adjectives are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
