IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The charts illustrate various information about public library in a town called Little Chalfont, including age of library members and total loans by different category from 2007 to 2016.
Overall, adults constitute the majority of membership of the library, whereas adults over 65 constitute the least. While the total loan of children's fiction is the highest, children's DVDs comprise a negligible amount. Moreover, the total amount of the loan has increased over the period with slight fluctuation.
51 percent of members are adults, followed by 22 percent children, 15 percent young adults of 13-17, and 12 percent adults 65 and over. The total number of loans was just over 15,000 in 2007, which increased to around 19,000 before a slight fall in 2009. The amount of load plateaued for three years consecutively until 2013, where loan declined to approximately 19,000. Again, it rose to a culmination at the number nearly 23000 in 2016.
Furthermore, the highest percentage of loans was for children's fiction, which was 38 percent in 2016. Moreover, children's DVDs and young adults were at only 1 and 2 percent respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task, providing a clear overview and selecting key features from both charts. You successfully identified the membership demographics and the trend in total loans. However, the analysis of the second chart (loan categories) is slightly underdeveloped. While you mention the highest category, you could have provided more comparative detail regarding the other categories to fully satisfy the 'make comparisons where relevant' requirement. The data points are generally accurate, though the description of the loan trend in 2013 is slightly confusing due to the phrasing 'where loan declined'. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the demographic data from the loan trends. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the sentences in the third paragraph could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the 2007-2016 trend and the 2013 specific data point is a bit abrupt. Despite these minor issues, the progression of information is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'constitute the majority', 'negligible amount', and 'plateaued' are used effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'amount of load' (should be 'loans') and 'culmination at the number', which sounds slightly unnatural. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, there is room for more precision in your word choices. The range is adequate for the task, and your meaning is always clear, which is the most important aspect for this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, which is positive. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'various information about public library' (missing an article 'the' and pluralization 'libraries') and 'total amount of the loan' (should be 'total number of loans'). Additionally, the phrase 'where loan declined' is grammatically awkward. Punctuation is generally accurate, but the control over articles and plural nouns needs more attention. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
