The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the picture below are reported some informations relating to a public library in Little Chalfont. The picture is composed by a pie chart about the age of library's users, a table about the percentage of loans by category and a bar chart representing the total number of loans in the period from 2007 to 2016.

Overall, it is possible to notice that, although adults are the most common users, children's fictions and adult's fictions seems to be equality loaned. Moreover, the total number of loans appear to be grown in the analysed period.

The pie chart, in particular, highlights that, in 2016, more than half of the members are adults and just the 22% is represented by children. The remaining 27% is, instead, represented by adults over 65 years old (12%) and young adults (15%).

In addition to that, in 2016, we can notice that adult's fiction and children's fiction are the most common category of loans and represent the 38% each; while the adult non-fiction loans amount to 13%, the other categories do not reach the 10% and, represent the 11% combined togheter.

Finally, the bar chart shows that in the period from 2007 to 2016 the total number of loans is generally grown from 15000 loans to more than 20000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all three charts provided in the prompt. You successfully identified the main features, such as the dominance of adults in the pie chart, the parity between adult and children's fiction in the table, and the overall upward trend in the bar chart. However, the overview could be more analytical; instead of just stating that loans 'grown', you could highlight the specific magnitude of the increase. While the data is generally accurate, ensure that you are not just listing numbers but actively comparing them, as required by the task instructions. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific data sets. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition to that', and 'Finally' helps guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For instance, the phrase 'the other categories do not reach the 10% and, represent the 11% combined togheter' is a bit clunky. Improving the flow between sentences would elevate the score further, but the current structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Terms like 'analysed period', 'represented by', and 'category of loans' are appropriate for this task. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'informations' (information is uncountable) and 'equality loaned' (should be 'equally'). Additionally, 'togheter' is a spelling error. While you use some less common vocabulary, there is room for more precise academic phrasing to describe trends and proportions. Overall, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The picture is composed by' (should be 'composed of'), 'total number of loans appear to be grown' (should be 'has grown' or 'grew'), and 'more than half of the members are adults' (should be 'were' to maintain tense consistency with the 2016 data). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the data. To reach a higher band, focus on consistent verb tense usage and correct prepositional phrases.
