Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While you have attempted to report on the data, the summary is fragmented and lacks a clear overview or logical grouping of the information. You have listed various percentages and figures without effectively comparing them or highlighting the most significant trends. The response is also confusing in its presentation of data, such as stating '1900' for a library loan figure, which seems inaccurate based on the context of the charts. To improve, ensure you provide a clear introduction, a distinct overview of the main trends, and group related data points together to facilitate comparison.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. There is no clear structure; the information is presented as a series of disjointed sentences rather than a cohesive report. Cohesive devices are largely absent, and the transition between the description of the 2016 data and the historical trend from 2007 is abrupt and confusing. To improve, you should organize your response into at least three paragraphs: an introduction/overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on different aspects of the data. Use linking words like 'furthermore', 'in contrast', or 'meanwhile' to connect your ideas logically.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on basic phrasing such as 'was about' and 'in this year'. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'their loan was 2%', which is imprecise when referring to library circulation data. The repetition of 'gradually increase' and 'these are numbers' suggests a restricted range of vocabulary. To achieve a higher band, try to use more precise verbs and nouns related to data description, such as 'accounted for', 'represented', 'fluctuated', or 'experienced a steady rise'. Avoid repeating the same sentence structures and vocabulary throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the clarity of the message. Examples include 'IN this chart the, children fiction and adult fiction was on top', which contains punctuation errors and subject-verb disagreement. You also struggle with tense consistency, switching between present and past tense when describing the data. Sentence structures are mostly simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. To improve, focus on basic subject-verb agreement and ensure your tenses are consistent when describing historical data. Practice combining simple sentences into complex ones using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions.
