Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing the pie chart, the loan categories, and the bar chart. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For example, the description of the loan categories is confusing, particularly the claim that 'children's and adult fiction seem's same about 38%'. The data shows these are distinct categories, and the phrasing makes it difficult to follow the comparison. Additionally, the description of the bar chart trends is imprecise, using vague terms like 'quite low' and 'fluctuates' without clearly highlighting the peak or the overall trend from 2007 to 2016. To improve, focus on grouping data more logically and using precise comparative language.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into four paragraphs, which is a good structure for an Academic Task 1 response. However, the flow between ideas is often mechanical. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes repetitive (e.g., 'firstly', 'in the second side', 'finally'). Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'the remaining 11% is conducted by all left out section', which lacks a clear connection to the preceding data. Paragraphing is present, but the logical progression within paragraphs is hindered by awkward phrasing and a lack of sophisticated linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision. There are several instances of incorrect word choice, such as 'conducted by' to describe percentages, 'non friction' instead of 'non-fiction', and 'loan accessibility'. The student also struggles with word forms, using 'attracted's' as a noun and 'Rised' instead of 'rose'. While the meaning is generally clear, the vocabulary is not used with enough flexibility or accuracy to reach a higher band. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and comparative adjectives would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('adults have the great interest', 'seem's same'), incorrect use of articles, and punctuation errors. For instance, 'children's and adult fiction seem's same about 38%' is grammatically weak. The use of tenses is also inconsistent when describing historical data. While the errors do not completely prevent communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the quality.
