Student answer (Band 6.0)
The three charts illustrate the information about a public library in town called Little Chalfont.
Overall, almost half of the members of the library were between the age 18 to 64. In contrast, children's fiction and adult fiction accounted for the largest proportion of the total loans, whereas children's DVDs shared the smallest share. Meanwhile, as the year passes, the total number of the loans increased, showing the upward trend.
Regarding the age of library members, children accounted for 22% in 2016. While, young adults between the age of 13 to 17 were 15% of the total distribution. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all three charts effectively, identifying key features and making relevant comparisons. You successfully highlighted the age distribution, the loan categories, and the trend over time. The overview is clear and captures the main trends. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, you stated the total loans showed a 'downward trend' between 2011 and 2013, which is correct, but the overall trend from 2007 to 2016 is more complex than just an 'upward trend' due to the mid-period fluctuation. Overall, the task is well-addressed with sufficient data support.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific chart. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Meanwhile', 'Regarding', and 'Additionally' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with sentence-level cohesion, such as the sentence fragment 'However, the total number of loans between 2007 and 2016', which lacks a main verb. Additionally, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'distribution', and 'fluctuation' (implied). There are some repetitive structures and minor word-choice errors, such as 'shared the smallest share' (redundant) and 'as the year passes' (should be 'as the years passed'). While you successfully use percentages and figures, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To reach a higher band, try to vary your reporting verbs and nouns to avoid repetition.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in town called'), subject-verb agreement issues ('there was almost 15,000 loans'), and sentence fragments ('However, the total number of loans between 2007 and 2016'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You show a good attempt at using complex sentences, but the control over punctuation and verb tense consistency needs improvement.
