Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the three charts provided, but the presentation is fragmented and lacks a clear overview or synthesis of the data. While you identify some key figures, the report reads more like a list of statistics rather than a cohesive summary. There is a lack of meaningful comparison; for instance, you list percentages for library members and loans without highlighting the most significant trends or relationships between the data sets. To improve, you should group related information, identify the most striking features (such as the dominance of adult fiction and the overall growth in loans), and provide a clear introductory summary statement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into three paragraphs, which is a positive start. However, the internal structure of these paragraphs is weak. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas; instead, the text relies on repetitive phrases like 'first', 'then', and 'after that'. This makes the writing feel mechanical and disjointed. The progression of information is not logical, as the sentences are essentially strings of data points without clear transitions or thematic grouping. Improving the use of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'furthermore') and ensuring each paragraph has a clear focus would significantly improve the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You frequently use the same words to describe data, such as 'number of', 'rate', and 'percentage', often incorrectly (e.g., '15 ratio of young adults'). There is little evidence of a range of vocabulary suitable for describing trends or statistical data. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise terminology for describing changes, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'accounted for', or 'constituted'. Additionally, ensure that terms like 'percentage', 'proportion', and 'ratio' are used accurately in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are many sentence fragments and run-on sentences, such as 'First, pie chart 51 percentage adults 18 to 64 age of library members'. The lack of proper verb usage (e.g., '15000 number of loans in 2007') makes the sentences difficult to follow. You rely almost exclusively on simple sentence structures. To improve, you need to focus on basic sentence construction—ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb—and begin incorporating complex structures, such as relative clauses or subordinate clauses, to provide more detail.
