IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Overall, working-age adults comprised over half of the library membership. Fiction books were by far the most popular borrowed category, while total loans demonstrated a general upward trend over the ten-year period.
In 2016, adults aged 18–64 made up the largest proportion of members at 51%, followed by children at 22%, young adults (13–17) at 15%, and seniors (65 and over) at 12%. Regarding borrowed items, fiction dominated, with children’s fiction and adult fiction each accounting for 38% of total loans. Adult non-fiction represented 13%, whereas children’s non-fiction stood at 6%. The remaining categories—young adult materials, adult audio books, and children’s DVDs—each accounted for minimal proportions ranging from 1% to 2%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. While you have identified the main features of the library membership and the breakdown of borrowed items, the analysis is incomplete. You have not addressed the 'upward trend' mentioned in your introduction with any supporting data or time-based comparisons, and you have omitted the second chart entirely. To improve, you must ensure all parts of the prompt are covered, including a clear overview and detailed descriptions of all provided data points. The current length is insufficient to fully develop the response, leading to a penalty for under-length.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction and a body paragraph. You use cohesive devices such as 'while', 'regarding', and 'whereas' to link ideas effectively. However, because the response is significantly under-length, the overall progression is stunted. The paragraphing is appropriate for the amount of text provided, but the lack of a concluding summary or a more detailed analysis of the trends makes the structure feel incomplete. To reach a higher band, ensure that you connect your observations more fluidly across multiple paragraphs and provide a more comprehensive overview of the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a data-reporting task, such as 'comprised', 'proportion', 'accounted for', and 'minimal proportions'. The word choice is generally accurate and helps convey the information clearly. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'borrowed' or 'represented' to show a wider range of lexical flexibility. Given the limited length, the range is adequate but lacks the depth required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The grammar is generally accurate, with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use passive voice effectively, such as 'fiction dominated' and 'total loans demonstrated', which is suitable for academic writing. Punctuation is used correctly throughout the text. There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to include a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional or relative clauses, and ensure that your sentences are consistently error-free across a longer, more developed response.
