Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph and chart provide data of a public library in a city named Little Chalfont Library.

Overall, there were seven loans by category in 2016 and age of the library members had 4 types. Between 2007 and 2016, total member of loans experienced quite a steady increase except in 2013.

Adults aged from 18 to 64 were the largest group of library members accounting for 51% of total members whereas only 12% of them were adults aged from 65 and over. Although young adults aged between 13 and 17 were only 15% of the total library members, surprisingly 22% of the members were children.

In 2016, there were seven total loans by category where children's fiction and adult fiction were similar, holding 38% in the category. Similarly, young adults and adult audio books shared 2% but the lowest category was children's DVDs. However, children's non-fiction had 6% loans by category. Total member of loans in the given time period reached its peak in 2016 with approximately 22,500 after a steady increase but in 2013, the members fell to 19,000 but escalated the very next year and hovered around that number till the final year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, including the age demographics and the loan categories. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the statement 'there were seven total loans' is a misinterpretation of the data, which shows seven categories of loans rather than a total count of seven. Additionally, the description of the trends in total loans is slightly confusing, as the data provided in the prompt is not fully integrated with the specific years mentioned. To improve, ensure that data points are accurately transcribed and that the relationship between categories and total figures is clearly distinguished.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on different charts. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'although', and 'similarly' are used to connect ideas. However, the progression of information is occasionally disjointed, particularly in the final paragraph where the transition between the 2016 category data and the historical trend data is abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow could be improved by using more sophisticated linking phrases to guide the reader through the comparison of the two distinct data sets.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for the description of trends and proportions. You use terms like 'accounting for', 'hovered around', and 'escalated' effectively. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'total member of loans' (should be 'total number of loans') and 'seven total loans by category' (which misrepresents the data). The range is sufficient to convey the main points, but more precise terminology regarding statistical data would elevate the score. Avoid repetitive phrasing and focus on using collocations that accurately reflect the nature of the data provided.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'Although' and 'whereas' clauses. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'age of the library members had 4 types' (which is awkward phrasing) and 'total member of loans' (singular/plural agreement). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are slightly clunky, which hinders the overall fluency. To reach a higher band, focus on reducing minor errors in subject-verb agreement and refining the structure of complex sentences to ensure they are error-free and contribute to a more professional tone.
