IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given pie chart, table and bar graph refers to the age groups, total percent of loan by categories and loan throughout the period of 2007 to 2016, at the Little Chalfont Library.

Overall, the maximum number of members at the library were adults with highest loan distributed to the children and adult fiction in 2016. However, total number of loans fluctuated throughout the period.

In 2016, the number of adults of age 18-64 years were the highest among all the age groups with 51 members, which was followed by the group of 22 children. The least number belonged to senior citizens 65 or over and young adults of 13-17 years with 15 and 12 respectively. Parallely, the loan on both, the children and adult fiction was highest at 38% and lowest for children's DVDs at only 1%.

Although, the total number of loans fluctuated throughout the period of 2007 to 2016. It began with nearly 16,000 and increased upto 21,000 till the year 2011 before it fluctuated for a while and finally reached to its peak at 22,000 in 2016.

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Terms like 'fluctuated', 'distributed', and 'senior citizens' are used appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'loan on both' which should be 'loans for both', and 'total percent of loan by categories' which is slightly imprecise. You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, which is good, but there is room for more sophisticated collocations to reach a higher band. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'The given pie chart... refers to' (should be 'refer to' as it is plural) and the sentence fragment starting with 'Although', these do not impede communication. You show good control over basic structures, and the errors are generally non-systematic. To improve, ensure that subjects and verbs agree and avoid starting sentences with subordinating conjunctions unless they are followed by a main clause within the same sentence.
